This is an exciting course which offers therapists an opportunity to expand their care of hand injuries with new depth and confidence! A broad range of topics are covered which will benefit both experienced therapists and those just entering the field. The multiple tissue effect of immobilization during healing versus movement and stress are compared. This is followed by an analysis of current therapeutic techniques for mobilizing tissues. The next topic is the use of Manual Edema Mobilization techniques (MEM) for the management of edema resulting from hand trauma. On Day two, complex injuries to the hand are explored with lively group discussion and problem solving. Topics on day two include care of grafts and flaps, free tissue transfer, care of revascularizations, replants and mutilating injuries. Participants are invited to share cases from their own practice. No prerequisites for this course!

  • Explain the effect of immobilization on various tissues including ligaments, bone, muscle, skin fascia and cartilage.
  • Describe methods and theories for mobilizing tissues utilizing dynamic/ static progressive splints, as well as serial casting techniques..
  • Demonstrate manual soft tissue release techniques for skin, musculotendinous, and fascial adhesions.
  • Perform the basic techniques of manual mobilization of the finger joints.
  • Demonstrate techniques for manual lymphatic drainage of the U/E (MEM) and finger/forearm bandaging for edema management.
  • Explain the various types of skin grafts, pedicle flaps and free tissue transfers for U/E injuries
  • Understand the categories of complex trauma/mutilating injuries and explain the unique concerns of each type.
  • Understand the psychological reactions to trauma and demonstrate awareness of testing tools used to assess psychological adjustment to injury.

Instructional Methods: Slide presentation, complete course manual, case study discussions, instructor demonstrations on Orthotic fabrication, Hands-on Lab for manual edema mobilization massage and bandaging.

Course completion requirements: Participants must take and pass a 40 question exam with a score of 80% or better.  Course evaluation must also be submitted prior to the awarding of certificate of completion.

1.45 CEU’s will be awarded to participants who attend all sessions, who complete fabrication of a minimum of 5 splints, and who pass a final examination with a minimum score of 80% (32/48 questions).
